My name is Richard, I was born April 5th, 1983 in Brooklyn, NY. Raised by my mother and grandmother, I have a younger brother and older sister. By the grace of God we survived the drugs, gangs, crime, and violence - but my father didn't. He passed when I was 9 years old.
In 2005 at age 22, my life was stagnant. So I moved to Allentown PA to jump start my life. In PA I got my first apartment, my first car and then had my first child - my son is 10 years old at the time of this post. When I hit 30, my life was not getting any better in terms of a vision for my future and what I will leave my son. So I moved to Winter Park, FL in 2014 to detox - meaning I stopped drinking, clubbing, and chasing women and money, all the low life stuff that I devoted my energy to.
I started to study great black men in history. My first books were Up from Slavery by Booker T Washington, Fredrick Douglas' Narratives of Slavery and The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. That study led me to black consciousness and the desire to know more about the struggle of my people in the past and how it effects me today.
Then Mike Brown (a black teenager) was killed by a white policeman who walked free. As a father it hit me very hard and I realized that the problem is not limited to place and persons, but the system itself is against us. I searched for solutions to the problem so I can be a part of the solution and not just complain from the sideline.
